A prediction in the 2006 Doctor Who story Fear Her has come true – in a roundabout way.
In Matthew Graham’s episode, swathes of people disappear from London and it’s down to the tenth incarnation of the Doctor to light the Olympic Flame at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics.
On May 26, Matt Smith, the 11th incarnation of the Time Lord, carried the real Olympic Flame as it travelled through Cardiff. He was the lead runner for that day and conveyed the Olympic Flame through part of Cardiff, close to BBC Wales’ Roath Lock Studios – the home of Doctor Who.
Smith told the BBC he was delighted to take part in this world-famous tradition. “To carry the Torch is an honour, one I thought I’d never get… I’m very excited.”
Smith’s run began at approximately 6.20am by the Norwegian Church Arts Centre in Cardiff. He wore the official Torch Bearer uniform and carried the Flame for a short leg of the journey before handing it to the next runner on the steps of the Senedd, often known as the Welsh Assembly Building.
