TV and movie composer Joel Goldsmith has died, aged 54.

Goldsmith followed in his father Jerry’s footsteps into the music business, composing music for various television series, including Stargate SG-1 and its spin-off Stargate Atlantis. He was nominated for three Emmys in his career: in 1998 for the SG-1 episode “The Nox,” in 2005 for the main title theme for Atlantis, and in 2006 for the Atlantis episode “Grace Under Pressure.” He also worked with his father on the score for the Star Trek movie, First Contact.

No cause of death has yet been released.

Various members of the Stargate cast and crew have tweeted about his passing. “Words cannot describe,”  SG-1 star Michael Shanks said. “Rest easy, friend. See you on the other side.” Stargate Universe star Lou Diamond Phillips said, “His music will never be silenced. His work for SGU was atmospheric, epic and emotional. A true artist.” while his Universe costar Elyse  Levesque added, “We’ve lost a great artist.”

  1. What happened? Was he ill, in an accident? So talented, writing pieces of sweeping range, evocative and dynamic. A huge fan of his father as well. So sad…
