After wandering away from the franchise’s roots with the third film in the most recent series, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Universal has decided to go back to basics with a fresh take on the Mummy series.
According to a report in Variety, Prometheus co-scriptwriter Jon Spaihts is working on a new version. “I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before,” he explained.
Universal produced the first Mummy film in 1932, and then a separate series beginning in 1940 with The Mummy’s Hand – itself the basis for the Hammer Films 1959 version of The Mummy. Stephen Sommers’ 1999 film returned to the 1932 movie for its inspiration.
