Whether or not Fox renews the series for a fifth year, the producers of Fringe are set on making a fifth season of the show regardless; it just might not be on TV.
Producer Jeff Pinkner has said that the writing team are attempting to wrap up as many story elements as possible before the end of the current fourth season as they are aware there is a strong likelihood that Fox will not renew the struggling series.
Any remaining storylines may be concluded in a one-off comic book, says Pinkner. “It would be really elaborate, and we would go to town on it and make sure that everything you needed to understand about the show would be in that and pay off that way,” he said. “That’s our back-up plan.”
It is understood that Fox are still wavering on renewal, as even a shorter fifth season would make the overall series more attractive as a syndication package.
