French comics artist Moebius has died aged 73.

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud passed away in Paris after a long illness. Well-known in his native France for his many contributions to the comic book world – a subject treated with seriousness much earlier there than in the English-speaking world – he also worked on many films, including Tron, Alien, The Abyss and The Fifth Element.

Giraud found fame with the Western character Lieutenant Blueberry in 1963, and used the Moebius alias for his science fiction work. He was one of the co-founders of Heavy Metal magazine and once told the Associated French Press that his ambition “was tremendous. I wanted to rock, so everybody in the comic industry would be stunned.” He also worked with Stan Lee on a Silver Surfer story, as well as Japanese manga master Jiro Taniguchi.
