Scottish comedian and broadcaster Billy Connolly has been cast as Dain Ironfoot in Peter Jackson’s two-movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, currently shooting in New Zealand.

Known as The Big Yin, Connolly will be best known to genre fans for his role as Father Joseph in the second X-Files movie, I Want To Believe. He has recently been the subject of controversy in the U.K. after apparently walking off stage during one of his comedy gigs.

Peter Jackson said, “We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself. With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can’t wait to see him on the Battlefield!”

The first part of The Hobbit will be released on December 14 this year, with the conclusion following on December 13, 2013.
