Samuel Youd, who wrote the Tripods quadrilogy under the pen name John Christopher, has died, aged 89.

The prolific author wrote numerous science fiction and fantasy novels under the Christopher pen name, with the original Tripods trilogy appearing in 1967/8, followed belatedly by a prequel in 1988. The first two novels were adapted by the BBC in 1984 and 1985, but although a script was prepared for the final book, the series did not go into production.

“Christopher” also wrote the classic disaster novel The Death of Grass (also known as No Blade of Grass) in 1956, which was recently serialised on BBC Radio 4, read by David Mitchell.

Under his own name and pen names Stanley Winchester, Hilary Ford, William Godfrey, William Vine, Peter Graaf, Peter Nichols, and Anthony Rye, Youd wrote in many different genres including the first two volumes in a cricketing trilogy.
