Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were both successful in the National Television Awards, voted for by the general public, which were presented on January 25th.

Smith won Best Male Dramatic Performance, with Gillan awarded the female equivalent, each beating their counterparts on Torchwood, John Barrowman and Eve Myles. Doctor Who failed to be acclaimed Best Drama, with the award going to Downton Abbey.
