Peter Weller, best known to genre fans for his role as the original Robocop, has signed up for an as-yet unspecified role in the new Star Trek movie which begins shooting early in 2012, according to Variety.

Weller appeared in the final TV incarnation of the franchise, Enterprise, as the xenophobic leader of the Terra Prime organisation, but it would seem unlikely that there is a link to that role. He joins a guest cast including Alice Eve and Benicio del Toro – who will not be playing Khan Noonien Singh, according to a very specific response from director J.J. Abrams over the weekend.

The 12th Star Trek film is set to open on May 17, 2013.
