J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have been hired by Bad Robot to script their adaptation of the graphic novel Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel for Paramount Pictures.

According to the report at Deadline, the Goliath scribes are working on a version of Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett’s coffee table book from Abrams Books, which centres on a robot built in 1893 to “prevent the deaths of men in the conflicts of nations”.

The character first appeared on a website in 2000, apparently interacting with various famous figures from history, and also made a one-shot appearance in the IDW comic book Heartbreakers in 2005. According to Guinan and Bennett’s book, Boilerplate was active for around 25 years but disappeared during the First World War, although there have been sightings of him subsequently.

Bad Robot are producing the film with Outlaw Productions’ Deborah Newmyer.
