Syfy Films has announced that its first project will be an adaptation of Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin’s shared universe series, Wild Cards.

The anthology series began in 1987 and has been published by Bantam Books, Baen Books, iBooks and now by Tor, who have a further volume planned for 2012. Set in an alternate world after the Second World War where an alien virus has rewritten human DNA, Wild Cards stories have been written by Martin, Melinda Snodgrass, Roger Zelazny, Chris Claremont, Paul Cornell and many other noted science fiction writers.

The movie will be written by Snodgrass, and she and Martin will be executive producers. “Wild Cards presents a terrific franchise opportunity given the volume of material from this compelling fantasy series,” Syfy Films’ Gregory Novcek explained. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to develop a film based on the anthology’s supernatural heroes, and to be working with such talented and visionary writers as George R.R. Martin and Melissa Snodgrass.”
