Talking to Deadline while demonstrating his 3-D conversion of his blockbuster movie Titanic, director James Cameron gave a brief update on progress on the new version of Fantastic Voyage which he is producing.

Real Steel‘s Shawn Levy is expected to direct the film, and Cameron explained that  “I gave him my idea about how this should be turned into a love story and he’s really run with it.” Levy has reworked Shane Salerno’s script for the reboot, which now centres on a doctor who is part of the miniaturised team injected into the body of his estranged and gravely ill wife. Because of the complexity of the effects involved, Cameron wants to ensure that the script is firm before it can move into production.

The original film was directed by Richard Fleischer and co-starred Raquel Welch, winning two Oscars for Art Direction and Special Effects. Isaac Asimov novelised the script (although it was published six months before the movie premiered), and wrote a separate novel based on similar concepts, as did Kevin J. Anderson.
