The Visual Effects Society has announced that the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to comic book icon, creator of multiple superheroes Stan Lee.

“Stan Lee’s imagination has created a completely original and profitable niche in the entertainment world and has allowed visual effects to flex its muscle in service to it,” VES chairman Jeffrey Okun explained. Previous winners include George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Ray Harryhausen.

The VES are already giving the George Melies award to Douglas Trumbull at the event on February 7.
