No, it’s not April 1st, and yes, this is a genuine story. 20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to the BBC children’s series Rentaghost, and have teamed Ben Stiller with his Night at the Museum writers Tom Lennon and Robert Ben Garant to work on the script.
Not usually regarded as one of the jewels in the crown of British fantasy drama, Rentaghost ran for nine series between 1976 and 1984, following the adventures initially of Fred Mumford, who sets up an agency for hauntings after his death. The adventures grew ever more farcical as the years went by, with the addition of a living pantomime horse, Dobbin (whose ‘owners’ went on to play the infamous Myrka in the Doctor Who story Warriors of the Deep).
The new version, Deadline reports, Stiller will play an American turnaround consultant who is sent to the UK to reinvigorate a failing company. A version starring Russell Brand failed to materialise after the lukewarn reception to his remake of Arthur.
But will Michael Staniforth’s theme tune be reused?
