Celebrating a career that stretches back to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Visual Effects Society Board of Directors has decided that the 2012 George Méliès Award is being given to Douglas Trumbull.
The Award honours individuals who have “pioneered a significant and lasting contribution to the art and/or science of the visual effects industry by a way of artistry, invention and groundbreaking work.” The official release recognises his work on 2001, The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner. He also directed the films Silent Running andBrainstom and recently contributed effects to Terence Malik’s The Tree of Life.
The Award will be presented at the 10th Annual VES Awards, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on February 7, 2012.
