The 2001 comic book miniseries Area 52 is belatedly heading for the big screen, courtesy of Summit Entertainment, Deadline reports.
The comic by writer Brian Haberlin and artist Clayton Henry has been described as “a fun romp, a cross between humour, horror, and science fiction”. It centres on an Antarctic base which houses all the alien tech once the people at Area 51 have finished working on it, with the creators at the time referencing the giant warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. When an alien beast wakes up, the ragtag band of guards have to use the available resources to defeat it.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian will produce the live action film adaptation, and JC Spink will be executive producer through Benderspink. No writers are yet assigned to the project.
