Speaking at a Q and A session after the preview of the first story of the final series of The Sarah Jane Adventures at the BFI IMAX on September 16, writers Phil Ford and Gareth Roberts confirmed that there will be no grand finale marking the end of the show.

The fifth series begins transmission on October 3 with Phil Ford’s story Sky, which gives the series a minor reboot. The three stories which make up the shortened season were filmed with the fourth series last year; three further tales were set to be recorded this summer, but star Elisabeth Sladen died in April.

Roberts commented that rather than bring the show to a set end, the producers felt that it was better that fans could imagine the adventures of Sarah Jane Smith, Luke, Clyde and Rani were continuing.
