After Justin Lin dropped out of contention to helm the reboot of the Highlander franchise, Deadline.com is reporting that 28 Weeks Later and The Intruders director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is Summit Entertainment’s choice for the plum assignment.

The new film is apparently going to return to the original mythology that “there can only be one” Immortal – subsequent movies and TV series diluted the effect of this. The script by Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway may have received a polish from Twilight adaptor Melissa Rosenberg, who The Hollywood Reporter suggested back in February would be coming on board the project. Fresnadillo is also linked to the remake of The Crow which has been in development for some time.

UPDATE: Summit has now confirmed that Fresnadillo is helming the movie, with filming set to start early next year.
