In case anyone had any lingering doubts, NASA has issued a strong statement regarding the authenticity of the new science fiction horror film Apollo 18, which opens worldwide today.

Apollo 18 is not a documentary,” Bert Ulrich, NASA’s liaison for multimedia, film and television collaborations, told The Los Angeles Times. “The film is a work of fiction, and we always knew that.”

Although NASA works with film makers to help promote a positive image of space travel, and originally promoted the movie, they now say they were only “minimally” involved with Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s film which suggests that Apollo 18 did fly to the moon, and what happened there was hushed up. “We never even saw a rough cut,” Ulrich said. “The idea of portraying the Apollo 18 mission as authentic is simply a marketing ploy. Perhaps a bit of a Blair Witch Project strategy to generate hype.”
