One of Stephen King’s most ambitious 21st Century novels is heading for the small screen, courtesy of Steven Spielberg and Showtime.

Under the Dome, King’s 2009 magnum opus, is being adapted for television by Dreamworks Television, according to Deadline.com. Dreamworks’ Spielberg and Stacey Snyder obtained the rights to the book soon after its publication and have now set it up with Showtime – making it one of the cable channel’s rare genre series.

No word yet has been given about the format, but the book lends itself to a longer-scale adaptation, dealing with the lives of the inhabitants of a Maine town who suddenly find themselves cut off from the outside world by an impenetrable Dome.
