According to a new interview with writers Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely, the Captain America sequel may well be set at least partly during the Second World War, despite the superhero’s jump to the 21st Century at the end of the film, and his appearance in next year’s The Avengers.
“There’s a few times in the film where you jump four months ahead, you jump six months ahead,” McFeely told NBC Miami’s Popcorn Biz column. “So we did that with the intention of saying, ‘Okay, there are certainly unseen adventures that Captain America went on in that period that if we want to, we can go back and explore later.’”
However, the writers are conscious that fans may want to see the man out of time element to the character which was, of necessity, missing in the first film. “It might be doing a disservice not to address the present day Cap, particularly because so much of the comic book run right now is present day Cap – that ‘man out of time’ is the icon,” Markus agrees.
And they’re looking at comicbook characters Sharon Carter (a relative of Peggy Carter, as played by Hayley Atwell in the movie) and Cap’s sidekick The Falcon as possible additions to the cast: “You have to walk a fine line there because it does seem like you’re dating your girlfriend’s daughter,” Markus says of Sharon, and suggests that teaming Cap and The Falcon could be “like Shaft with Cap and the Falcon.”
