According to a report in The Times of India, production of the as yet untitled 23rd official James Bond film may move from the Indian subcontinent across to South Africa.
India Take One Productions have been handling negotiations for filming but have hit an obstacle – the railway authorities have yet to grant permission for the production, helmed by Sam Mendes, to block the line in Ahmedabad and Goa for an extended sequence with “Daniel Craig doing stunts on a freight train.”
According to Take One’s Pravesh Sahni, “Trains are the backbone of the film. We’ll pay for the shooting and also mention Indian Railways in the credit line. The shooting was supposed to happen in October-November. Now, we’ve postponed it to January-February.” Although Indian Railways have given permission to film, Sahni has not been able to discuss the logistics. “I need to meet someone and explain how important it is for us to block two tracks for eight hours a day over five to six days.”
Sahni warned that “South African authorities are waiting to provide everything that is required to support this movie.” Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi told the paper he was unaware of the impasse but “if it’s a win-win situation for both the production unit and the railways, I am willing to help.”
There has been some speculation on fan sites that the brief information given may indicate that Bond 23 is linked to Jeffrey Deaver’s recent updated Bond novel Carte Blanche, which also features a freight train in its opening sequence.
Bond 23 is set to open on October 26, 2012 in the UK and November 9 in the US.
