No sooner has NBC ordered an update of the Frankenstein story than rival network ABC plunders the horror vaults for a new version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of split personalities, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde.
According to Deadline, writer Sheldon Turner is preparing a pilot, simply called Hyde, in which Grant Hyde, a thirtysomething ER doctor with a degenerative eye condition, who is conflict-averse and hesitant to be captain of his own destiny, tries an experimental treatment to improve his eyesight. He begins to experience a strange side effect: when he goes to sleep, his id manifests itself as Hyde, a fearless, gregarious personality who takes control where Grant can’t.
The idea of split personalities was at the heart of NBC’s recent My Own Worst Enemy, while the Jekyll and Hyde story was updated by Doctor Who and Sherlock producer Steven Moffat in a six part series entitled Jekyll featuring James Nesbitt.
