Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves and director David Yates may turn their attention to a darker fantasy as their next project: Stephen King’s epic post-apocalyptic novel The Stand.
The Hollywood Reporter noted earlier this year that Warner Bros. wanted to produce a fresh adaptation of King’s 1000+ page blockbuster, and HiFix now suggests that they want to reunite their successful Potter team on what could be a series of movies based on King’s book. The site points out that Yates mentioned his potential involvement while promoting the final Potter film, and claims The Stand “is a priority project for the studio and for Vertigo Pictures, which will produce.”
The Stand, which charts a battle between good and evil in an America devastated by a man-made flu virus, was the basis for a 1994 TV miniseries that had to tone down some of the horror elements of King’s original novel.
