Eddie Murphy is adding to his vocal repertoire after being cast to play Hong Kong Phooey in the new live-action/animated cinema version of the Hanna-Barbera classic cartoon underway from Alcon Entertainment.
The 1974 series was created to capitalise on the success of the wave of Eastern action films, and saw Scatman Crothers voice canine crimefighter Phooey – who in reality was Penry, the mild-mannered police station janitor.
Announcing the news, Alcon Entertainment’s co-founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said: “We could not be happier that Eddie Murphy will star as Phooey. There is no overstating his contributions to cinema, and to such enduring stars of family entertainments such as Shrek and Dr. Dolittle. We look forward to watching him re-imagine yet another classic character.”
The new movie will be directed by Alex Zamm. No release date has yet been set.
