House executive producers Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner are working on a new version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein for NBC.

The single script, which is described as “a modern-day take on the legend of Frankenstein”, follows in the footsteps of FX’s American Horror Story, with the network hoping to tap into the current trend for contemporary horror while using the classic monsters to which they hold the rights, via Universal Studios.

Assorted attempts have been made to update the legend before, notably most recently with the USA Networks pilot film Frankenstein, based on a story by Dean Koontz and Kevin J. Anderson. Creative differences led to Koontz departing that project and penning a series of five novels on the theme.
