James Earl Jones and make up artist Dick Smith are to receive honorary Oscars for lifetime achievement this year from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Jones is of course best known to genre fans as the voice of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, while Smith has made major contributions to many films including The Exorcist and Scanners, and is known as the godfather of modern make up and special effects techniques. His influence has been cited by numerous experts in the field, including Rob Bottin.

The awards will be presented at a Governors Awards banquet, to be held in Hollywood on November 12.
