According to star Emily Rose, the second season of Syfy’s Haven will see characters “dying left and right.”

The show, loosely based on Stephen King’s novella The Colorado Kid, is stepping up its game, according to an interview in Entertainment Weekly. “Everybody agreed that because we’re a Stephen King series, we’re allowed to go a little bit darker,” Rose said. “[People are] getting killed, things are happening, and there’s a lot more gun play this year. It feels a little bit more of a cop show interlaced with the supernatural. It’s also a bit heavier this year. Last year, we were able to get drawn into the town and the quirkiness of the characters, and this year, we’re dealing with weightier topics. A lot of stuff that’s heavier for the characters to be going through.”

Among the various plotlines, Eric Balfour’s character Duke will have to deal with someone from his past; the alternate Audrey Parker introduced in the first season finale will appear in at least the first three episodes; and Rose’s Audrey Parker will cope with real frogs in her hair.

Haven returns tonight (July 15) in the US, and is expected to start on Syfy UK later in the summer.
