Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are teaming up for a new version of their cult horror hit The Evil Dead.

The original film from 1981 launched both men’s careers, alongside their fellow producer Rob Tapert, whose Ghost House production company is behind the retelling. Raimi, Campbell and Tapert will produce, but in a change from the original, the film will be co-written and directed by South American filmmaker Fede Alvarez, with script revisions by Diablo Cody.

In a statement, Raimi, Campbell and Tapert said, “We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the Evil Dead series. We can’t wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us 30 years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements.”

At present it is unclear whether Campbell, currently starring in the hit show Burn Notice, will simply produce the movie, or reprise his role of Ash, last seen in the 1992 film Army of Darkness. Commenting on the new project, Campbell tweeted, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”
