Private Eye followed up their claims of “chaos” behind the scenes of Doctor Who with a new claim this week that the 2012 run of the show may consist of just five episodes stripped across one week. Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat greeted the latest Eye story with this Tweet: “Do I need to tell you that you can ignore the Private Eye story? No? Good! I look forward to this being called a rant.”

The Eye recapped the last week’s Doctor Who news events, including a seeming spat between Moffat and BBC News over their claims that BBC1 Controller Danny Cohen had blamed the limited run of Doctor Who episodes in 2012 on Moffat’s commitments to the same channel’s Sherlock.

Responding to Doctor Who writer Neil Gaiman’s suggestion that Moffat had been “shafted” by the BBC News report, Moffat noted “It’s not your imagination. Unbelievable, unacceptable.” He later added: “The scheduling of Dr Who has got NOTHING to with Sherlock.”

However, Private Eye‘s claims of “chaos” behind the scenes appear to have some merit given recent public activities, so their suggestion this week that BBC Worldwide may be down-scaling their plans for the 50th anniversary of the show in 2013 may also have some truth to it. According to the Eye, BBC Worldwide feel that fewer episodes in 2012 will have an impact on the sales of Doctor Who merchandise through 2013.
