Although Woody and the other toys from Pixar’s Toy Story trilogy find a new home at the end of Toy Story 3, and seem set for a “happy ever after”, it’s not the end of their on-screen adventures. Pixar is pressing ahead with Toy Story Toons, the first of which is released alongside Cars 2 this month.
Hawaiian Vacation, a six-minute cartoon, reunites the voice cast including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Michael Keaton, Joan Cusack and Jodi Benson, as the toys help Ken to make up for screwing up an island getaway for him and Barbie. “We wanted to do it with all the cast, all the characters, so it was important to get all the actors on board with it, which they happily did. I don’t think it would have been possible without them,” director Gary Rydstrom told Deadline Hollywood.
Although there are no plans for a fourth feature starring the toys, Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter came up with the idea of continuing the story with animated shorts set in the characters’ new environment. “It was possible partially because we had the world and characters all ready to go, but also because people were hanging on to Toy Story and didn’t want to see it go away. It was a way to keep working on it,” Rydstrom said. “I think it’s the perfect way to keep Toy Story going and alive for the time being and to be able to work with these characters. I think it’s a wonderful idea.”
