Hot on the heels of his new dinosaur-based TV series Terra Nova, which premieres later this year, Steven Spielberg is in discussions about a return to Jurassic Park.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg has had further meetings with Thor and I am Legend writer Mark Protosevich to brainstorm ideas for a fourth movie in the series based on the Michael Crichton novel. Spielberg directed the first two instalments, but only executive produced the third film, which was helmed by Captain America director Joe Johnston.

The trade notes that “Both Universal, which released the trilogy, and Spielberg’s camp stress that no one has been engaged to write a script and that the discussions have been purely exploratory.” However it is clear that Universal needs a new franchise, and the improvement in special effects, even on a TV budget for shows such as Terra Nova and Primeval, could see even more realistic dinosaurs interacting with the human cast.
