Actor and singer Roy Skelton has died in his Brighton home, aged 79. Skelton was best known to 1970s children as the voices of bickering duo Zippy and George in Rainbow and as the one of the voices of the Daleks on Doctor Who.

Skelton was with Rainbow from the early 1970s until the show ended in 1992. The show’s presenter Geoffrey Hayes said of Skelton “He really brought Zippy and George to life through his voice [and was] fabulous at improvisng if something went wrong.”

On Doctor Who Skelton voiced the Daleks, as well as the Cybermen and the Krotons, between 1967 and 1988. He appeared in Big Finish’s audio drama Sarah Jane Smith: Test of Nerve and reprised the role of Zippy for the last time in 2008 in an episode of time warped cop drama Ashes to Ashes.
