Fast Five star Dwayne Johnson is in talks to star in John Chu’s sequel to Stephen Sommers’ G.I. Joe, which Paramount appears to be fast-tracking for a summer 2012 release.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and the studio are reworking the cast from the first film, with Channing Tatum’s Duke one of the few characters expected to return for the sequel. Johnson would play Roadblock, “a big guy with a big gun,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Insiders are speculating that the concentration on G.I. Joe 2 follows concerns that the next Star Trek film will need to be moved back from its originally planned June 29, 2012 release date. Although J.J. Abrams has emphasised the need for quality rather than speed on the Trek movie, as yet no formal announcement has been made about a change of date.
