MGM, Warner Bros. and New Line have announced the release dates for their two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will open on December 14th, 2012, with its continuation, The Hobbit: There and Back Again following a year later on December 13th, 2013.
The two films are being directed by Peter Jackson, following the departure of Guillermo del Toro. Filming began in New Zealand in March with Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett all reprising their roles from The Lord of the Rings. Sherlock star Martin Freeman is playing Bilbo Baggins, with Stephen Fry, Sylvester McCoy, James Nesbitt and Aidan Turner among the other British actors in the cast.
The screenplays are penned by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson based on Tolkein’s novel, which is set 60 years before the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
