Giger NecronomH.R. Giger, whose work became best known through its use in Ridley Scott’s seminal SF horror film Alien, has died, aged 74.

According to Swiss public television, the surrealist artist died as a result of injuries sustained during a fall. The Alien was inspired by his painting Necronom IV, and it led to him winning an Oscar in 1980. His work can also be seen in Poltergeist II and Species, and he came up with a new design for the Batmobile for Batman Forever, although it was not used. His art also graced the covers of many albums.
