Screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class) have been ‘confirmed’—according to The Hollywood Reporter—as the writers of Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. The pair would double up as producers on the second and third films in the new Star Wars trilogy. The movie trade paper quotes ‘sources’.

The news comes hot on the heels of Lucasfilm’s confirmation of Michael Arndt as the writer of Star Wars Episode VII. Kasdan co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, the second film in the original Star Wars trilogy, working from an initial draft script by Leigh Brackett. He also worked on Return of the Jedi and wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Lucasfilm and Disney have not confirmed the news, pointing out that any announcements will be made through starwars.com.
