The first Doctor of the modern era, Christopher Eccleston, is to play the character of Malekith the Accursed in Marvel Studios Thor: The Dark World. Featuring opposite Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Eccleston is playing the major villain from the Thor comic-books. Malekith is the supreme ruler of the ‘dark elves of Svartalfheim’ and once wielded the Casket of Winters.
Eccleston, who played the Doctor in the first season of the immensely successful revived BBC series, previously played the villains in The Seeker: The Dark is Rising and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The Thor sequel is being directed by Game of Thrones Alan Taylor and is set for release in 2014.
